If there’s one thing little boys love to have read to them, it’s books about trains. From I Love Trains by Philemon Sturges to The Little Red Caboose by Marian Potter, picture books about trains have always been popular. This title by Margaret Wise Brown was originally published in 1949 at the height of train travel popularity in America. In this book, one train is a huge locomotive that can barrel down the tracks, and the other train, a small train, a wee little train, is a toy. This is their story and they have more similarities than one might think. The rhythmic simplicity of the words are a great accompaniment for Cadlecott award winning illustration team of Leo and Diane Dillon. While my son did love this book when I used to read it to him, he’s a little too old for picture books now, I wasn’t as big a fan of this one as I was of other train books. But I guess the only thing that counts is what books our children love to have read to them, right?
