Too Dumb for New York City, Too Ugly for L.A. Music Review Waylon JenningsListening to Waylon’s voice on Too Dumb for New York City, Too Ugly for L.A. causes me to think that he’e a long lost friend. I have felt this way for years. His voice sends out friendliness but that doesn’t mean that he can’t be stern and tough at the same time. On this new release, both sides of Waylon shine to the point of perfection that we always expect from him.

In “Just Talkin’,” Waylon tells us how fed up he is with both democratically controlled houses of Congress. With this being an election year Waylon could be sending his listeners a subliminal message to vote all those check bouncing congressmen out of office and back to a 9 to 5 job like the rest of us. “Too Dumb For New York City” is Waylon’s truth filled story about his experiences in America’s two largest cities.
(Between the hustlers and the hookers/I must have made their day/cause they peeled me like an apple/Lawd . . . I must have made their day), Waylon admits that his red neck was glowing on his first trip to New York and that definitely explains his bad experience on his maiden voyage to the Big Apple. Later in this song he tells us how one has to have a pretty face to make it in L.A., I’ve never been to Los Angeles but those are my sentiments exactly and the reason why I’d pick N.Y.C. over L.A. every time. On “Hank Williams Syndrome,” Waylon tells some of the truth of the most legendary of country legends. Waylon admits on this tune that the way he once idolized Hank has in no way helped him live as long as he has. The booze, drugs and women do take their toll.

The Waylon Jennings Band on this new release is playing as tight as ever, a cohesive country unit which Waylon insists on recording with, to the point of turning away various Nashville producers. Concerning the band, a good choice was made and the result is another great Waylon Jennings album, Too Dumb for New York City, Too Ugly for L.A.
