The Dead Bird by Margaret Wise BrownMister Dog is possibly the last Margaret Wise Brown book published before her death. It was published six months before her premature passing at the age of 42. An independent life filled with self-reliance and adventure are concepts found within the pages of Mister Dog. It’s a book that is not the most politically correct, that’s a fact. Independence in a day when everything is crowd this and crowd that? Self-reliance when it takes a village to raise a child? Adventure when we need to have our safety zones? And look at the cover, oh my, that dog is smoking a pipe!!! For goodness sakes, I just hope people will love this book about a dog who belongs to himself and a little boy who belongs to himself. An entire generation of kids raised on this book are most likely self-reliant people who make their own way in this world. This may be a good picture book to provide our recent high school and college grads with and is definitely worth reading to your child or grandchild. I find Mister Dog to be silly and fun and a must read for my future grandchildren.

If you’ve read Mister Dog to your children or grandchildren, we’d love to know your thoughts on this classic from Margaret Wise Brown.
